I've only read one book on it, Practical MDX MDX is kinda bizzare but extremely literally and pretty fun to see it in action. You'll have to learn another language, MDX (which is SQL for OLAP cubes) if you want to write ultra-efficient reports. Schema and snowflake schema on wikipedia or youtube and see what you can scrap together. Location is a dimension (what state/province they're in), time is a dimension (want to see sales by month, day, whatever). That fact table will include foreign keys to dimensions (how you want to view the data. Whatever aggregations your doing (sales amount, money spent, etc.) is a measure inĪ fact table. So think of it as saving whatever queries you're already writing as a view. This is a long process and essentially is what you're already doing. I don't know how much you know about OLAP cubes but a very perfunctory explanation is you denormalize the data and store the pre-calculatedĪggregates.

I would like to be able to use some of the mining structures provided by Microsoft (decision trees, logistic regression) on my cube. I've watched some videos and readĪ bunch and figured I'd give it a go at rolling my own cube. Note that you wouldn't be able to make any changes to the cube(s) without reprocessing it, so you may need the source database at some point and in any event. After writing hundreds of queries to try to analyze how patterns change over time in my relational database I came to realize that I had been going about it all wrong and I needed to use a multidimensional database. I'm not sure if that is available on Codeplex as well.
